University Communications and Public Affairs

MENU

University Communications and Public Affairs plays an integral part in planning and communicating the latest and greatest happenings at UC San Diego. Here are a few examples of how we tell our story:

UC San Diego Annual Report 2013, Print and Online

The annual report was intended to feature highlights of the campus commitment to teaching, research, and community service. Critical to the report this year were the clusters of stories that showcase the interdisciplinary nature of UC San Diego and the innovation it fosters. The campus and UC San Diego Foundation financial statements for FY 2011–12 were included. The project won a silver medal in a national CASE competition for university annual reports.

Front Page News and Story Development

UC San Diego reached almost a billion dollars in research funding and we worked with reporters directly to build a story that was worthy of this accomplishment. The UT ran an above-the-fold Sunday edition story on the milestone.

Chancellor’s Campus Welcome – media event and coverage

UC San Diego welcomed our 8th chancellor, Pradeep K. Khosla to campus with activities and events designed to get broad media coverage.  Press conferences, one-on-one interviews, industry tours, student engagement and other activities were planned as part of a strategic messaging platform to ensure media engagement and broad visibility.

Summer Session Brochure

To get the biggest return on investment, the Summer Session office needed a multipurpose informational and promotional piece with a long shelf life that appealed to a wide audience: high school students, parents, and local and international college students. This brochure emerged after discussions that identified the priorities of office identity, feeling of summer, and academic rigor.

Web Communications: News Center and This Week

News Center and This Week @ UC San Diego are UCPA’s workhorse communications vehicles, reaching thousands of viewers each day. News Center uses responsive design techniques to maximize its usability across devices and viewing contexts. This Week brings news directly to readers’ mailboxes in an e-magazine format.

Founders’ Celebration Visual Identity Program

To celebrate the arrival and investiture of the campus's eighth chancellor, Pradeep K. Khosla, a system created around the “8” was implemented through a variety of print, web, and environmental graphics; video; and product. The repeated image generated visual recognition and meaning throughout the new chancellor's introduction to the campus and San Diego community.

Division of Social Sciences website and communication plan

UCPA worked with the Social Sciences dean, faculty and staff to develop a comprehensive communication outreach plan to demonstrate the impact, importance and relevance of division’s work to a broader audience that included communications objectives and key positioning, target audiences, as well strategies, tactics and initiatives to reach their constituents.

A key step in implementing the plan was a redesign of the Division’s website. The site’s new design focuses on a rotating group of stories illustrating the sometimes surprising reach and impact of the social sciences. UCPA worked with the Campus Web Office to customize templates within the campus CMS, resulting in a beautiful, functional and easy to update website.

UC San Diego’s Fiftieth Anniversary

In celebration of UC San Diego’s 50th Anniversary Special Events and Protocol conceptualized, designed and produced four unique signature events.

  1. Celebrate50 – Award-winning Founders’ Dinner and Chancellor’s Medalists Awards
  2. Founders’ Day - new Town Square in the heart of campus.
  3. IDEaS - Award winning Innovation Day Expo and Symposia
  4. Green Open House - campus-wide effort to showcase UC San Diego as a front runner and innovator in environmentally friendly technologies and practices.

Career Services Center: Building Bright Futures

The report, produced annually, was a snapshot of key initiatives and outcomes related to the broad services provided by our Career Services professional staff. It also encapsulated trends in student postgraduate employment and further study. The report also thanked the center’s many partners for their engagement with UC San Diego students.

The Preuss School Benefit Package

This save-the-date, invitation, and program/auction paddle supported the major annual fundraising benefit for The Preuss School UCSD. Developed in collaboration with Preuss's director of development, the unified design and messaging about the Preuss School Promise contributed to exceeding fundraising goals.
