University Communications and Public Affairs plays an integral part in planning and communicating the latest and greatest happenings at UC San Diego. Here are a few examples of how we tell our story:

Enrollment Campaign: Summer Session 2015

To increase enrollment of current UC San Diego students and especially nonresident students, the Summer Session office wanted an eye-catching piece that could be easily distributed. The postcard and related electronic graphics combined the messages of accelerating academic progress and the fun of summer in San Diego. One of the colleges requested a reprint of the postcard for its orientation packet.

UC San Diego Annual Report, 2014

The theme of the 2014 UC San Diego Annual Report was “Defining the Future of the Public Research University,” which is an overriding message of the campus’ first-ever Strategic Plan. Steps and actions underway to implement the Strategic Plan are featured throughout the report as are academic highlights, and financial overviews of the UC San Diego Foundation and the campus.

Successful Aging

When the Stein Institute for Research on Aging became part of the new Center for Health Aging, it was an opportune time to update the design of its monthly newsletter, which informs donors and friends about its monthly lecture series, programs and latest research. The new design leverages UC San Diego Health System brand style to increase affiliation and impact, and allows for a different masthead image each month to reflect the diversity of the audience.

Black History Month Graphics

The Creative Services and Publications design team works annually with the planners of Black History Month to create a unique graphic that is applied to all print and online materials related to the February events and celebration. This year the theme was “100 Years of Black Life, History and Culture.”

50th Anniversary: Revelle College

To create awareness for its 50th anniversary and to brand related events throughout the year, Revelle College wanted a special graphic that was reminiscent of the college’s seal. In conjunction, new pole banners were created to reinvigorate Revelle Plaza and highlight the values of the college and its iconic buildings and images, many of which were recently renovated and improved.

Invitation: Audrey Geisel University House

This letterpress invitation, reply card and map set was created for the university house manager to convey the uniqueness of events hosted by the chancellor and associate of the chancellor at their residence. The blank cards are printed with specific event information as needed.

Campuswide Event: Founders Celebration 2014

The annual three-day Founders Celebration, hosted by the Office of the Chancellor, commemorates the day that the campus was founded in 1960. UCPA plans, publicizes, and promotes the five major events for students, faculty, staff, and donors through development and execution of individual event concepts; communication outreach; and print, web and promotional pieces.

Surfing into the Future

UC San Diego made history by partnering with the region’s surfing industry to create the world’s first algae-based, sustainable surfboard. This video, which was created for the weekly digital magazine ThisWeek@UCSanDiego, generated interest from the Department of Energy, CBS This Morning and Nike.

Red Fish Blue Fish

Originally created as a side project by the videographers in Creative Services and Publications, this video of UC San Diego’s prestigious graduate-student percussion ensemble, red fish blue fish, is now used by its artistic director and the Department of Music to raise awareness for the ensemble, which performs nationally and internationally and has launched all of its alumni into related professional employment.

Educating Tomorrow’s Science Leaders

As the largest provider of ocean and earth science education in the region, UC San Diego’s Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography wanted to showcase its resources and mission for K–12 outreach. The video highlights the programs, learning skills, and understanding of the planet that the aquarium provides.
